This September 2nd, our providers worked with Destination Healthy Skin of The Skin Cancer Foundation to offer FREE skin cancer screenings to those in need.
This event is an annual participation for us in the Edgebrook Shopping Center parking lot, which we started in 2023.
Why FREE?
Once per year, Edgebrook Dermatology is able to partner with DHS to provide these free screenings to those whose insurance doesn’t allow them to see us. While, as a clinic, we do accept self-pay patients to avoid ever turning anyone away from the care they deserve, we understand that the payments of quality care aren’t always arrangeable. This is why we jump to provide these free screenings annually each September, all in support of the opportunity the Destination Healthy Skin provides.
Destination Healthy Skin delivers this free program via a bus that drives across the country, working with local volunteer Derm providers, such as us, to offer these free screenings to communities all around the United States.
So Why Should I Screen?
During this round of our DHS event, our providers saw a total of 89 patients in a 6 hour window! Amongst these 89 patients, our office detected 8 basal cell carcinomas (one of the 3 leading forms of skin cancer) and 11 actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions). That’s a 21% rate of diagnoses that may now save those lives.
The Stats
Since we started working with DHS in 2023, we’ve performed a total of 499 free skin cancer screenings! Here’s what we’ve detected in that time:
- 353 seborrheic keratosis (non-cancerous, but can be hard to know the difference without derm examination)
- 125 Actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous lesions)
- 23 Basal Cell Carcinomas
- 4 Squamous Cell Carcinomas
- 3 Melanomas
We are pleased that DHS trusts to collaborate with us to provide this specialty care to the community. Now there are citizens who have taken the initial step toward to their skin care, and hopefully prolonged lives, with these early diagnoses.
