For 30 years, we’ve watched skincare evolve from simple cleansing and moisturizing to a dizzying landscape of serums, hacks, filters, viral product hauls, and contradicting “expert” advice. Today, skincare feels louder and more confusing than ever.
So for our 30th year, we’re going back to basics. No trends. No hype. No overconsumption. Just dermatologist-backed fundamentals that always work.
1. Your Skin Has Needs—And Most Aren’t Trends
Your skin doesn’t follow influencer cycles. It follows biology.
At its core, your skin needs only a few things to function well:
Cleansing
Hydration
Protection
Targeted treatment (if needed)
Everything else is optional.
The truth? Most people can maintain healthy skin with 3–4 products, not 12. Your skin can only absorb so much effectively, so it’s important not to overwhelm it.
2. The Real Foundational Routine
Cleanse (AM + PM)
Your cleanser should remove impurities without stripping your skin. If your face feels “squeaky,” it’s too harsh.
Look for:
Cream or gel cleansers for most skin types
Our favorites include SkinMedica’s HA5 HydraCollagen Hydrating Foaming Cleanser OR Original Facial Cleanser
Avoid: strong fragrance, alcohol-heavy formulas
Moisturize (AM + PM)
Hydration keeps the skin barrier intact: your body’s natural shield.
Look for ingredients like:
Ceramides
Hyaluronic acid
Glycerin
Fatty acids
A moisturizer does not need to be expensive to be effective. It just needs to be backed by clinically proven ingredients (such as SkinMedica’s HA5 Water Burst Moisturizer or CeraVe’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion).
Protect (AM always)
If there is one non-negotiable in all of dermatology, it’s daily sunscreen!
SPF protects against:
Premature aging
Hyperpigmentation
Melanoma and other skin cancers
Collagen breakdown
And yes—even when it’s cloudy. Even when you’re indoors near windows.
SPF 30+ broad spectrum is the minimum. We recommend SPF 50+ when the UV index is higher, especially in the summer months or on a tropical vacation. Our favorites include SkinMedica’s Tinted Mineral Shield, CeraVe’s Hydrating Sunscreen, or any from La Roche Posay.
3. Treatments: Keep It Simple
Once the basics are in place, then you can consider treatments, which you only need if you have a specific concern.
Dermatologist-proven active ingredients include:
Retinoids: wrinkles, acne, texture
Vitamin C: brightening, antioxidant protection
Niacinamide: redness, sensitivity, barrier repair
AHAs/BHAs: exfoliation, acne, uneven tone
But “more actives” does not mean “better skin.” Layering too many can cause irritation and actually weaken the skin barrier, so be cautious and intentional. Remember to trust the process, too, and that it will take time for results to show. Be consistent, but patient.
4. What the Skincare World Gets Wrong
Influencer culture has made skincare feel like a scavenger hunt. In reality, your skin doesn’t need:
❌ 10-step routines ❌ Constant exfoliation ❌ Every new launch ❌ DIY treatments ❌ Ingredient fear-mongering ❌ Quick fixes or “hacks”
What it does need is consistency.
The best skincare routine is one you can repeat every single day.
5. How to Avoid Overconsumption
Before buying a product, ask:
What specific problem am I trying to solve?
Do I already own something that fills this role?
Is this backed by science—or is it just trending?
Your skin can’t tell how much you spent, how cute the packaging is, or how viral it went on TikTok. It only recognizes ingredients.
6. When to See a Dermatologist
Some concerns need more than products. Seek professional care if you experience:
Persistent acne
Eczema or psoriasis flares
Sudden rashes
Changing moles
Pigmentation that worsens
Severe dryness or irritation
A “sore” that doesn’t heal
A board-certified dermatology provider can tailor a plan based on your actual skin biology… not generalized advice.
7. The Heart of 30 Years in Skincare
If there’s one lesson three decades have taught us, it’s this:
Healthy skin doesn’t come from complexity, it comes from consistency. A simple routine, applied daily, always outperforms a complicated one applied occasionally.
In a world full of noise, misinformation, and endless “must-haves,” we’re proud to keep championing what has always worked: Science. Simplicity. Skin health above all.
